Tony Abbott just promised an expensive, taxpayer-funded battle to overturn new marriage equality laws as they pass. Tell politicians to take a stand now.

Yo guys, remember when Tony Abbott got elected and Tumblr stared in collective horror? Well, to no one’s surprise, this is now going down.

According to the petition email:

Tony Abbott has threatened to do everything he can to stop marriage equality. He wants to stop the ACT passing a law that could allow everyone to marry the person they love before Christmas.

If the ACT gives everyone the right to marry, New South Wales and South Australia are set to follow. This could kick off unstoppable momentum for marriage across Australia. Or it might start a huge legal and political battle led by the Prime Minister.

Tony Abbott could decide not to get in the way. His party – and even his own family – are showing more and more support for marriage equality. A huge petition showing massive popular support could help show Tony Abbott it’s pointless to fight equality.

Abbott is preparing for a big fight. He knows that Labor and the Greens plan to pass the ACT’s marriage equality law. He has since announced that hewill try to stop marriage equality in the High Court.

Tumblr talks a lot about this kind of thing, so be kind enough to sign and signal boost? The petition right now has a fair amount of signatures, but not really that significant on a grand scale. Disheartening, to say the least.
