[rotates to do the 69]

Technologically-challenged lush. Does have a name, but you can call me tonight.

This blog is run by a bird. It contains bad text posts, and sometimes hot mutant yaois.

While I enjoy a great many of the wonderfully created AUs this fandom has to offer and I do enjoy how great McAvoy looks during Soccer Aid, a different type of Sport AU would be appreciated. Hockey perhaps? Or even a fictional sport with Quidditch? Rival Quidditch players Xavier and Lehnsherr having it out on their brooms? And releasing the tension later in the broom closet?

haha sounds like anon really just wants more Harry Potter AUs

but okay, while I realize that it’s pretty much futile to respond to posts like these, I’m going to anyway because I think we’ve had this kind of discussion before but it probably bears repeating, especially with the recent [ish] influx of new people in the fandom.

here’s my problem with this post: reader entitlement. maybe anon didn’t mean to come off as such, but it’s 8am and I’ve already casually discussed this post with a couple of different people and we’ve all agreed that to us, at least, it reads a lot like someone coming up to a drive thru menu and trying to order the type of fic they want.

you’re tired of football (soccer) AUs? great, don’t read them. you’d appreciate a different kind of sports AU? fantastic, that’s fine and dandy that you’d like a hockey AU, but why don’t you write one yourself? why do people have to stop writing football AUs in order to write you a hockey AU?

I’m only using these two as examples since they’re what was specifically named, but this goes for any type of AU - roommate AUs, canon-divergent AUs, space AUs, regency AUs, coffee shop AUs, you all know that the list goes on for eternity. writers are going to write about things that they like and what inspires them. if I want to write ten different fics where Charles is a dragon, then hell yeah (!!) I’m certainly allowed to do that, and if it happens to inspire three other writers to write dragon!Charles too, then I’m lucky! pro tip: exchange ‘dragon’ with ‘football player’ and we’re back to the original concept here.

this is a hobby and none of us are getting paid (if some of you are, please direct me to where I can sign up). this has all been said over and over again in a million different ways - here’s a post by Neil Gaiman that is sort of relevant - but boil it all down and the bottom-line fact of the matter is this: no one owes you anything.

if you’re worried your writing talents aren’t up to par, which you really shouldn’t be, my friend, then there are kinkmemes where prompts can be posted. if your prompt is inspiring, someone will come along and write you that hockey AU. and when they do? kudos the hell out of it. leave a lengthy comment on it. blog about it and write up a fic rec here on tumblr. love it! appreciate it.

as it happens, it’s easy in this fandom to be inspired to write a football AU while all of those Soccer Aid pics of McAvoy are floating around, and there’s nothing wrong with either loving or hating it. but just because you want to see a different kind of sport AU being written (and again - take a shot at writing it yourself, you can do it!!) doesn’t mean everyone else is suddenly obligated to stop working on what they want to write, what they like to write, and write just for you.

and as a disclaimer: this applies not only to writers but to artists as well.
